Where to start

How the game works

Every session needs a job.

The Division 2 makes the most sense when you decide what you're after first: a specific exotic, a gear set, a clear of an Incursion. Pick the build that needs it, find the activity that drops it, and use targeted loot to narrow the pool. Optimize a piece only after the build works.

Goal→Build→Farm→Improve
01

New agent

Play the campaign through. It unlocks settlements, skills, crafting, recalibration and specializations along the way. Don't stop to perfect leveling gear; it gets replaced quickly. Echoes of Central Park (Nov 3) will boost characters under level 40 who buy it.

OrderCampaign → level 40 → first build
02

Returning agent

Check your stash before dismantling anything, fill gaps in your recalibration library, and read the Red Horizon changes: Determined no longer chains headshots, red-core gear sets were rebalanced, and brand bonuses moved around.

OrderLibrary → rebuild → farm
03

Endgame agent

Keep a loadout per job: sustained DPS, a skill build, healing or tanking, and one for PvP. The Blackout Dark Zone now lets your full build, SHD Watch and Expertise count in PvP, so a separate normalized PvP build still matters for Balanced and Classic.

OrderRoles → execution → optimization

Three questions

Pick a build

1. Where are you fighting?
2. How do you want to fight?
3. What matters more?

Gear, loot and upgrades

How gear works

01

Buildcraft

A build is a loop, not six famous items. Cores, set bonuses, talents, weapons, attributes and skills should all serve one job.

One job per build
02

Targeted loot

Zones and missions rotate bonus loot categories; the Summit and Countdown let you choose one. It improves your odds; it doesn't guarantee a specific item.

Narrow the pool
03

Recalibration

Pull rolls and talents into your library, then put them on other gear. A piece can normally change one slot, so the other rolls need to be right already.

Fix one thing
04

Optimization

Raises rolls that are already on a good item. It can't turn the wrong attribute into the right one.

Perfect good gear
05

Expertise

Account-wide proficiency and item upgrades that add small amounts of power. A long-term sink, not the base of a build. Season 4 changes how it ties into Prototype Gear.

Do this last
06

Difficulty

Higher difficulty only pays off when your clears stay quick. Farm the highest level your build handles cleanly.

Speed beats ego

Where the loot comes from

Where to farm

Solo / open world

Control points

Blueprints, materials, XP and the zone's targeted loot. A steady everyday farm.

Group / loot

Countdown

Lots of drops in a short run, plus Requisition for named-item caches. Countdown Surge (Oct 6–13) doubles Requisition.

Flexible / loot

The Summit

Choose your own targeted loot and play at your own pace, solo or grouped.

This season

Red Moon Rising

PvE Dark Zone event until Nov 3 with its own loot pools: exotics, DZ named items and Prototype gear.

Endgame / team

Incursions and raids

Broken Rain (Steel Creek Dam, four players) is the newest Incursion. Mechanics and roles matter more than raw SHD level.

PvPvE / risk

Dark Zone

Weekly rotation: Toxic (PvE) and Balanced every week, with Blackout (uncapped) and Classic swapping weekly.

Short answers

Quick answers

What gear should I keep?+

Exotics, named items you don't have yet, high rolls your library is missing, and pieces with the right natural attributes for a build you'll actually play. Donate eligible leftovers for proficiency, then dismantle the rest.

What should I farm first?+

One complete build. A basic set with matching bonuses beats a stash full of unrelated "best" items.

Does my old marksman rifle build still work?+

Not the same way. Since Red Horizon, Determined no longer lets a converted headshot kill trigger another guaranteed headshot. Body-shot chaining moved to the Iron Will exotic chest, which you get from the free season pass track.

Is crossplay coming?+

Yes, in November. It's on by default and can be switched off on the character selection screen. Clans move over and can hold 100 members, and leaderboards reset.

What's the best XP farm?+

Fast open-world content on the highest difficulty you clear comfortably, with directives you can manage. Dark Zone Surge (until Sep 29) triples DZ XP if you're leveling your Dark Zone rank.
