What changed from Classic
Mages keep Arcane, Fire and Frost and gain Arcane Blast, Ice Lance and Frostfire Bolt, with talents that let the schools mix. Blizzard calls the class one of the strongest damage dealers and the best at crowd control, and still very fragile in melee. Several changes target gold farmers and boosters.
Baseline changes
- Comprehension is a new Mage-only minor tradeskill. Comprehend Scroll (General tab of the spellbook) lets a Mage read scrolls that creatures drop, and Blizzard says the benefits are for players to discover.
- Frostfire Bolt is a new level 40 spell, past the beta cap. It counts as Fire and Frost, takes a 3-second cast, hits hard up front and leaves a damage-over-time Slow. It uses the higher of your Fire and Frost spell damage and the lower of the target's two resistances. Blizzard's example: Ignite plus Ice Shards makes it crit for 280% of its damage.
- Cone of Cold lasts for less time and Mage Armor returns more Mana from Spirit. Blizzard says the shorter Cone of Cold and the weaker Improved Blizzard Slow (40% at most, down from 65%) target gold farmers and boosters who kite packs of creatures.
- Talents that give a free effect on a spell cast now trigger less often when you cast far lower-rank spells (Arcane Concentration and Impact are the named examples), so low-rank spam cannot fish for procs. Blizzard says other classes' talents get the same rule.
By talent tree
Arcane
- Arcane Blast (new, 11 points): a 2.5-second cast that raises all your Mage damage and its own Mana cost. It stacks 4 times for 8 seconds or until you cast something else, so it rewards mixing in other spells. Missile Barrage (new, 16 points) can make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast for no Mana, with double the chance from Arcane Blast.
- New or redesigned: Arcane Geometry (range), Arcane Impact (crit chance for all Arcane spells), Arcane Focus (Arcane hit chance) and Arcane Mind (Intellect and Arcane crit damage). Magic Attunement is baseline.
- Arcane Power now needs Presence of Mind, Arcane Meditation needs Arcane Concentration, Magic Absorption has a 1-second cooldown, and Improved Counterspell always gives a short Silence with one point.
Fire
- Heating Up (new, row 4, needs Pyroblast): non-periodic crits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch cut your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, up to 3 times (1.5 seconds).
- Ignite gives each Mage their own debuff rather than one shared by every Mage, and no longer loses damage when crits land close together. Wake of Fire (formerly Improved Fire Blast) and Incineration moved to row 1, and Incineration also boosts Ice Lance and Arcane Blast crits.
- Improved Fireball also shortens Frostfire Bolt. Improved Scorch helps only the casting Mage, Blast Wave no longer needs Pyroblast and Burning Soul needs 3 points.
Frost
- Ice Lance (new, 11 points): an instant, low-damage hit that does 300% more against a Frozen target. Fingers of Frost (new, row 5, needed for Ice Lance) lets Chill effects grant charges that make your spells treat the target as Frozen.
- Ice Block moved to row 4 as the 16-point talent. Cold Snap moved to row 5 as the 21-point talent and its cooldown rose from 5 to 10 minutes.
- Elemental Precision adds Fire and Frost hit chance instead of cutting resists. Permafrost adds 11/22/33% Chill duration instead of seconds. Winter's Chill helps only the casting Mage and only Frostbolt and Ice Lance crits.
Blizzard Confirmed Blizzard, Oct 7, 2026 ↗ (summarized in CGN's words; the Blizzard article has the full list)
Blizzard says class abilities and talents may keep changing during the beta. Where a later beta build changed something, the beta section below has it.
How talents work: Talents start at level 10 and keep Classic's rows. One-point milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points spent, and a new 16-point milestone was added. Some talents are unchanged from patch 1.12, some are changed, and some class buffs that used to be talents (Blessing of Kings, Improved Mark of the Wild, Divine Spirit) are now baseline. To respec, including Legacy talents, visit a class trainer in a major city. Dual Specialization arrives at level 40.
Talent trees and milestone talents
Each tree has one-point milestone talents. This table is built from the same beta talent data as the planner (October 1 build, with Blizzard's October 8 talent changes). A level 30 character has 21 talent points (one per level from 10 to 30), so the 31-point talents are out of reach at the beta cap. The Legacy perk Talented can unlock talent points up to five levels earlier.
| Tree | 11 points | 16 points (new) | 21 points | 31 points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arcane | Arcane Blast | Missile Barrage | Presence of Mind | Arcane PowerOut of reach at level 30 |
| Fire | Pyroblast | Heating Up | Blast Wave | CombustionOut of reach at level 30 |

Level-30 builds
CGN publishes one 21-point level-30 build per role-spec, each decoded from Icy Veins' level-30 guides and validated against the planner data.
| Spec | Role | Summary | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcane Mage | DPS | Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage are the core at 30, with Arcane Concentration and Meditation for mana. | See the build → |
| Fire Mage | DPS | Ignite, Pyroblast, Heating Up and Blast Wave all fit in 21 points; Wake of Fire speeds up mob grinding. | See the build → |
| Frost Mage | DPS | Frostbolt, Frostbite and Shatter set up Ice Lance on frozen targets; Fingers of Frost arrives at 30. | See the build → |
A build here is not "best in slot": CGN has not validated a full item pool at the beta cap.
Beta changes so far
October 8 build (Oct 8, 2026)
- Fire: Impact no longer triggers from Flamestrike's periodic damage.
- Frostbolt and Fireball ranks 1 to 5 and Arcane Missiles ranks 1 to 3 were retuned so each new rank is an upgrade and the ranks grow more evenly.
October 1 build (updated October 2) (Oct 1, 2026)
- All Mage scrolls from comprehension got another balance pass and can no longer be cast while moving.
- Fire: Hot Streak was renamed Heating Up, since it no longer depends on a streak.
- Fire: Combustion has 3 charges again (it had 4).
- Fire: Improved Scorch's Fire Vulnerability does not roll a second resist check.
- Frost: Winter's Chill does not roll to be resisted, since the original spell had to hit.
September 24 build (Sep 24, 2026)
- Arcane Missiles checks line of sight only once, at the start of the channel, so a target moving out of sight no longer stops the missiles.
- Fire: Wake of Fire lasts 30 seconds (it was 20) and Hot Streak lasts 20 seconds (it was 15). Ignite no longer double-dips on percentage damage bonuses. Blizzard's note: Wake of Fire was hard to use while leveling because Mages must restore Mana between fights.

Open or promised beta issues that mention Mage
- Chaining spells does not play the next cast's pre-cast effects and sounds until the first cast finishes (for example two Fireballs in a row).
- Several debuffs, such as Faerie Fire and Demoralizing Shout, do not cause threat. On October 8 Demoralizing Shout and Demoralizing Roar were fixed; Blizzard's notes don't mention Faerie Fire, and the issue is still on its list.
- The glancing blow chance for casters is wrong at every level, and so is the damage reduction. Work in progress.
- The glancing blow damage penalty for melee is wrong against targets above your level. The chance, and the penalty against equal-level targets, are right. Work in progress.
- Taking damage while channeling Arcane Missiles fires a full-damage bolt instead of a reduced one.
- Mages who learn Research can be prevented from accessing it.
- Create Firestone ranks 3 and 4 do not show the conjured item tooltip. Blizzard said the next build fixes it.
- The Cooldown Manager is still a work in progress, and how complete it is varies by class. Banes and curses do not track after you drop and re-acquire a target, Healthstone, Arcane Blast, pet cooldowns and item enhancements (Windfury, rogue poisons) cannot be tracked, a Mana gem needs another spell cast to start tracking, and Priest tracks all spells by default.
What we don't know yet
- How Mage compares at level 60: the beta cap is 30 and the 31-point talents cannot be tested yet.
- Final abilities and talents, which Blizzard says may change during the beta.
