Under the hood

How CRB works

You do not need any of this to use CRB. It is here for players who want to know why the card says what it says.

Two ways to use CRB

The Rotation Helper looks at your character and the fight and recommends the best ability to use next. Sections 1 to 5 below describe how it decides. Sequence Mode follows a CRB sequence instead: CRB tracks where you are in it and shows the current and upcoming action, as described on the Sequences page. In both, you press your normal ability key.

1. It works out who you are

CRB detects your class and level automatically. Levels 1 to 9 use a leveling profile for the whole class. From level 10 it reads your talent points and selects the tree you have put the most into. Hybrid builds use the talents you have learned to pick the most useful profile. There is no normal spec picker; an override exists under Advanced for testing only.

2. It walks a priority list

Each class has a leveling profile and each talent tree has its own lists: what to keep up (buffs, auras, seals), what to use on a single target, what to use on several targets and, for healers, what to cast by health tier. CRB goes down the list and recommends the first spell that passes every check below. You can read the lists on the rotation pages.

3. It filters by what you can actually cast

  • Learned spells. Every recommendation is filtered against spells you know, so talent and build differences adapt on their own.
  • Rank. It uses the exact rank you have learned. Where the game reports a number itself, the game's number wins.
  • Form and stance. A Druid in Cat Form gets Cat abilities. Warrior Overpower and Revenge follow their stances.
  • Target. A spell that only works on some targets is skipped when the target cannot be affected. Today that is the Paladin spell Exorcism (Undead and Demon).
  • Usability. Cooldowns and "usable" answers come from the game. Spells the game itself enables, like Overpower after a dodge, are only recommended when the game says they can be used.

Whatever is first in the list but cannot be used right now is passed over, and the next spell that can be used is recommended. Why this spell? shows how to read that.

What else can the Rotation Helper take into account?

Where the game lets addons read it and CRB's data covers it, a recommendation can also account for:

  • resources and cooldowns;
  • buffs, debuffs and how long an effect has left;
  • combo points;
  • range and usability, when the game makes them safely available;
  • combat context;
  • the priority rules in the rotation lists.

What the game hides, CRB does not guess at (see section 5).

4. It heals, if you play a healer

On a healer build, selecting a friendly player switches the card to healing and selecting an enemy switches it back to damage. CRB sorts the ally into a health tier and offers the first usable spell in that tier's list. It can say HOLD to save mana. The Healing Radar ranks hurt group members and is information only. See Smart Healing.

5. It copes with hidden numbers

In some situations Forever hides numbers from addons, such as how long a cooldown or a damage-over-time effect has left. CRB never guesses with a hidden number and never errors on one. It uses the game's yes or no answers, shows the game's own cooldown swirl, and estimates a hidden timer from your own casts (shown with ~).

6. It never plays for you

CRB is player-controlled. It recommends actions only. It does not create key presses, run unattended combat, choose a healing target for you or get around protected actions.

  • In the Rotation Helper and in Sequence Mode, CRB shows the recommendation and you press your normal ability key or click it.
  • The optional heal keys and the click-cast bar use Blizzard secure fixed-spell buttons. Every cast still needs your key press or click.
  • Nothing protected is changed in combat. Changes wait until combat ends.

7. How sure are the rules?

The lists were compared with published Forever class guides (checked October 12, 2026). Every rule is marked Testing because none has been confirmed in the game client. The rotation pages show, for each section, whether two guides agree, only one does, or none backs it yet. That is a statement about guides, not about the game.

The data these pages draw on was reviewed against game build 1.60.1.70170-70235 on October 6, 2026. Data revision 3ccb7e28286d.
