Bosses and keys

Lair Bosses and keys

Endgame bosses come in a ladder. Beat an Initiate boss to earn the key for a Greater one, and a chance at Belial and Mephisto above them. This page maps the ladder and the keys. It does not list drop tables, which change too often to publish safely.

A hooded adventurer and a line of fighters face a colossal horned demon that looms out of a red storm.

The ladder

Roster and keys as documented by Icy Veins for Season 15, matching Blizzard's 3.2.1 references to Initiate and Greater Lair Bosses.

Initiate Lair Bosses

Key: 1 Lair Key each

  • Grigoire
  • Beast in the Ice
  • Varshan
  • Lord Zir
  • Urivar Vessel of Hatred

1 Greater Lair Key. A chance at a Stygian Stone, which converts 1 for 1 into any Greater key.

Greater Lair Bosses

Key: 1 Greater Lair Key each

  • Duriel
  • Andariel
  • Harbinger of Hatred Vessel of Hatred
  • Bloody Butcher

Tougher fights than Initiate bosses. Since patch 3.2.1, Initiate bosses have the same Mythic Unique drop rate as Greater ones. The Greater Lair Boss nodes in War Plans need Torment VI.

Exalted Lair Bosses

Key: Belial: 2 Betrayer's Husks. Mephisto: 1 Crux of the False Prophet.

  • Belial
  • Mephisto (Echo of Mephisto) Lord of Hatred

Belial can also ambush you after any Lair Boss; beating him drops a second round of that boss's loot and a Betrayer's Husk. Mephisto's key drops from high-Torment endgame activities.

Where keys come from

  • Lair Key War Plans, Helltides, World Bosses, Legion events, Tree of Whispers caches
  • Greater Lair Key Initiate Lair Bosses
  • Betrayer's Husk Belial's Ambush
  • Crux of the False Prophet High-Torment endgame activities

Rules worth knowing

  • You do not need a key to start the fight, only to open the Hoard chest afterwards.
  • In a party, every player brings their own keys to open the chest and receive their rewards.
  • Lair Bosses need Torment I or higher.
  • Each boss has its own pool of Uniques and Mythic Uniques. Since 3.2.1, Mythic Uniques from Initiate and Greater Lair Bosses and from Belial's Hoard come only from that boss's pool, and random extra drops keep a small chance of others.
  • Echo of Mephisto has better loot in 3.2.1, including a guaranteed Mythic drop (Blizzard).

Season 15 changes to boss loot

Patch From Blizzard's 3.2.1 notes.

  • Mythic Uniques dropped by Initiate and Greater Lair Bosses, and those chosen from Belial's Hoard, come only from that boss's Unique pool. A small chance of others remains through the general drops.
  • Greater Lair Bosses and Belial got a slight boost to Mythic Unique odds; Initiate Lair Bosses now match Greater ones.
  • Echo of Mephisto has better loot overall, including a guaranteed Mythic drop.
  • Fixes: only one player used to get credit for defeating Belial in a party, and Belial could fail to progress quests if the Hoard was opened quickly. Both are listed as fixed.

Using this with War Plans and Splinters

Lair Bosses are a War Plans activity, and Baal's Splinter of Evil modifies them in Season 15. The Lair Boss tree needs Torment I, and its Greater Lair Boss nodes need Torment VI. See War Plans for chains built around key farming.

What we do not publish: per-boss drop tables and material lists. Community trackers keep those current; Blizzard also changes pools between seasons. Checked September 29, 2026.
