Runes and Runewords

Runes and Runewords

Diablo IV has two Runeword systems. The socketed one, from Vessel of Hatred, pairs runes in your gear. Season 15 added a second: classic recipes you craft in the Horadric Cube. This page keeps them apart and labels what is official.

Tall dark standing stones carved with glowing orange runes rise under a red sky while a hooded adventurer looks on from the left.
Season 15 · community-documented

Blizzard's Season 15 overview does not describe the classic Runeword recipes below. Icy Veins and Maxroll documented them after launch (Maxroll's Cube guide, September 19, labels them Seasonal), and Blizzard's patch 3.2.2 notes refer to the Edge and Lore Runewords. Blizzard has not said whether they continue after the season. Treat this list as Tested, not official.

Socketed runes and Runewords

Runes are socketed into gear. There are Ritual runes and Invocation runes; a Ritual rune sets a condition and an Invocation rune supplies an effect. Put a Ritual rune and an Invocation rune in the same item and you get a Runeword: when the condition happens, the effect fires. Vessel of Hatred

Lord of Hatred added tools to make specific runes: the Horadric Cube can craft Legendary runes, and the Jeweler's Rune Crafting recipes feed Mythic Unique crafting. Official

Season 15 classic Runewords

These are crafted in the Horadric Cube: put a Common-quality (white) item of the right type and the listed runes into the Cube and transmute. An Ancestral base gives an Ancestral result. The result is a Unique item, not a socketed effect. Tested

Season 15 also added twelve runes to make them: five Ritual and seven Invocation.

Using them well

  • Check that your build wants one. Several current guides use them: Maxroll's Blazing Scream Warlock guide mentions Stealth, Ancient's Pledge and the speedfarm variant with Enigma.
  • Mind the slot. Chest, helm and weapon recipes need different base types; two-handed recipes need a two-handed weapon.
  • Save runes for recipes you need. The upgrade ladder above turns lower runes into higher ones, so spare low runes are not wasted.
  • Expect fixes. Blizzard's 3.2.2 notes fix Edge granting two items from the Purveyor of Curiosities, Lore making the helm invisible, and the Sol rune's damage reduction not triggering as expected.
