Gear and itemization

Gear, crafting and itemization

Since Lord of Hatred, every item can matter and every crafter has a job. This page covers item quality, the affix system, Tempering, Aspects, Uniques and Mythics, and where each is made.

Base gameLord of HatredSeason 15

Checked September 29, 2026 · patch 3.2.2 · Season 15

A blacksmith hammers a glowing blade on an anvil beside a roaring forge in a gothic smithy. Armored figures on stands, racks of swords, hanging chains, candles and a chest of red gems fill the room around him.

Where each crafting job happens

Blizzard's notes name these crafters; the Cube is in Temis.

  • Blacksmith

Tempering, Masterworking and the Forge menu, including the Mythic Unique caches (one for class-usable Mythics, one for Iconic Mythics only).

  • Jeweler

Gems, including Rune Crafting for Mythic Uniques. Royal Gems now cost 10 Forgotten Souls to craft (was 30) and Grand Gems 50 (was 300).

  • Occultist

Enchanting (Ancestral items cost 10 Forgotten Souls, was 25), imprinting Aspects, Nightmare Sigils from Sigil Powder, and the Infernal Horde Compass (500 Sigil Powder, was 666).

  • Horadric Cube

Transmuting, rerolling, Transfiguration, Charms and runes. Full recipe list. Lord of Hatred

Affixes, Greater Affixes and resistances

A Greater Affix is a stronger version of an affix. Items of any quality can now roll them, and you can find them on Tempered affixes too. The Loot Filter can look for items with one to four Greater Affixes.

Resistances changed in patch 3.2.1: Single Resistance affixes on equipment, Charms and Tempering recipes are now worth 7 times an All Resistance affix, and Blizzard retuned All Resistance Tempering to match. Patch

The Loot Filter's Aspect-upgrade condition flags Legendary Aspects that would add to your collection of unlocked Aspects. Blizzard raised Legendary drop rates in Torment I to V in 3.2.1 partly so players rely less on Cube upgrades to complete that collection. Patch

Every Unique can now drop at character level 1 in any difficulty. Patch

Legendary Aspects

Legendary Aspects give a Legendary item its power. Over 200 were overhauled in 3.0, and many former passive powers now live here. You unlock Aspects by collecting them, then imprint them on gear at the Occultist. Season 15 changed several Aspects: Heavenly Strength is now available to Spiritborn, Eluding and Aspect of Audacity gained damage reduction, Wyward's Aspect now grants Lightning Resistance, and Embattled Aspect drains Fortify faster. Patch

Which Aspects a build wants is build-specific; see the linked guide on each build card.

Uniques, Mythic Uniques and Legacy items

Where they come from

  • Lair Bosses drop Uniques and Mythic Uniques from their own pool. See Bosses and keys.
  • Random drops have a higher Mythic chance since 3.2.1.
  • Blacksmith, Jeweler and the Cube can make Mythics deliberately. Season 15 explains the three methods.
  • Legacy Uniques from Season 15 are permanent, such as Leoric's Crown and the Stone of Jordan.

Mythic crafting rules to remember

  • Upgrading an item directly to Mythic in the Cube keeps every affix, Tempering and Masterwork.
  • Items made that way carry a Crafted tag, and you can equip only one.
  • Unmodifiable items, such as those already Transfigured, cannot use that recipe.
  • Iconic Mythics are Mythic quality only; there is no Unique version.

Tempering

Maxroll's May 23, 2026 guide, plus Blizzard's changes since. Tested

Tempering adds one extra affix to a Rare, Legendary, Unique or Mythic Unique item. You learn Tempering recipes from Tempering Manuals, which drop in most endgame content; a recipe can be used as often as you like. Each recipe holds three to five possible affixes. Manuals are class-bound: Tempering with another class's recipe leaves the affix inactive.

You can reroll a Tempered affix three times, plus once more per Greater Affix on the item, and each reroll replaces the earlier result. A Scroll of Restoration, from the Dark Citadel, Infernal Hordes and world bosses, refills the charges once they are spent.

Recipe categories decide which slots can take them:

  • Helms, chest, pants: Defensive and Utility.
  • Gloves: Offensive and Utility.
  • Boots: Mobility and Utility.
  • Amulets: any category except Weapon.
  • Rings: Offensive and Resource.
  • Weapons and off-hands: Offensive and Weapon.

Masterworking and gems

Masterworking

The Blacksmith upgrades an item's quality with materials such as Obducite, which drops from Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes and Undercity Tributes of Refinement. Do it after Tempering and before Transfiguration, which locks an item. We do not list per-rank costs because they change with item power and patches.

Gems

Weapon gem effects are much stronger since 3.0, and there are two new tiers above Grand Gems: Horadric and Flawless Horadric. You make them with the Amalgamation recipe in the Cube, not at the Jeweler. Elites in Torment X and above drop many more Gem Fragments and often a random Royal Gem. Official

A sensible gearing loop

CGN This is our reading of how the systems fit, not a Blizzard recommendation.

  1. Level and gather

Play with a Loot Filter on. Keep Ancestral Legendaries with Aspects you have not unlocked yet.

  2. Fill the slots that define your build

Get the Uniques or Aspects the guide names, using the Cube's 3-to-1 and upgrade recipes on spare gear.

  3. Temper and Masterwork

Do the deterministic upgrades once the item is one you plan to keep.

  4. Aim with the Cube

Use Tuning Prisms to steer rerolls toward your missing stats. Keep Transfiguration for the last step, because it locks the item.

  5. Add the Talisman and Mythic pieces

Fit your Talisman, then work toward Mythic Uniques.
