How the Barbarian plays

The Barbarian wades into packs and lets weapon choice and Fury management do the work. It can carry several weapons and assign them to different skills, so a build can mix a slow heavy hitter with a fast spinner.

Weapon Expertise and multi-weapon play

Expertise bonuses reward committing to a weapon type (Blizzard's 3.2.1 notes, for example, change the Bleeding bonus of Two-Handed Sword Expertise). Skills can be bound to different weapons, and shouts and defensive skills keep the class durable while it stays in melee.

Archetypes

The main ways this class is built today.

  • Whirlwind

    Spin through enemies, spawning Dust Devils, buffed by shouts. The most relaxed way to clear content.

  • Hammer of the Ancients

    A generator-less Core skill build that leans on one heavy hitter and stacking debuffs.

  • Flame Charge

    Charge with the Battering Ram variant, leaving fire behind and scaling damage over time.

  • Ancients and minions

    Call of the Ancients and related summons; Blizzard halved the Madawc variants in 3.2.1.

Strengths

  • Durable and mobile at close range.
  • Several Core skills are viable. Whirlwind is S for speed farming at Maxroll and Icy Veins, and S for leveling at Mobalytics.
  • Easy to pick up: most builds are direct melee.

Trade-offs

  • Short range compared with casters and archers.
  • Blizzard reduced the class in 3.2.1 after it was strong for several seasons, so older guides may overstate it.

Season 15 and patch 3.2.1

Blizzard's own notes are marked Patch; community reports are marked Meta.

  • Patch Blizzard's note: Barbarians have been strong for the past couple of seasons, so the class was adjusted while other Core skills were improved.
  • Patch Damage per 10 Strength was cut from 1.1% to 0.8%. Rallying Cry's Madawc variant and Call of the Ancients' Madawc damage were both halved.
  • Patch Ring of Red Furor now needs 30 Fury (was 100) for its guaranteed critical strikes; Ring of the Ravenous, Ramaladni's Magnum Opus and Rage of Harrogath were retuned.

Season 15 Legacy Uniques usable by the Barbarian: Arioc's Needle (two-handed polearm), In-Geom (one-handed sword), The Furnace (two-handed mace) and Messerschmidt's Reaver (two-handed axe), plus the four every-class Uniques.
