Archetypes

The main ways this class is built today.

  • Blood Wave

One-button blood waves. The Hematolagnia variant makes Blood Wave a Core skill with no cooldown.

  • Bone Spirit

Spamming spirits; the cooldown is gone and minions solve Essence.

  • Minions

Army of the Dead, Golems and skeleton builds for durability and boss damage.

Strengths

  • Blood Wave and Bone Spirit sit at or near the top in most lists.
  • Minion builds are a good leveling route.
  • Big area damage and strong boss damage in the best builds.

Trade-offs

  • Many other Core skills fell behind the two favorites, which Blizzard is trying to fix.
  • Minion management adds upkeep.

Season 15 and patch 3.2.1

Blizzard's own notes are marked Patch; community reports are marked Meta.

  • Patch Blizzard's note: the top Necromancer builds revolved around the Core skill variants of Blood Wave and Bone Spirit, so many of the other Core skills underperformed. Many buffs aim to bring those base Core skills back into relevance in the late game.
  • Patch Damage per 10 Intelligence rose from 1.25% to 1.625%.

Legacy Uniques usable by the Necromancer: Henri's Perquisition (focus), In-Geom, The Furnace and Messerschmidt's Reaver, plus the four every-class Uniques.

Uniques Blizzard changed in 3.2.1

Ebonpiercer, The Unmaker, Red Blessing, Deathless Visage, Hangman's Hand, Will of Rathma. These are the Unique items listed for this class in the patch notes, not a ranking. Patch
