Rockstar's Red Dead Online site describes a vibrant world that keeps changing: forge your own path as you battle lawmen, outlaw gangs and ferocious wild animals to build a life on the American frontier. You can build a camp, ride solo or form a posse, and explore everything from the snowy mountains in the north to the swamps of the south, from remote outposts to busy farms and towns. Your character and camp
- A custom character. You create your own, separate from Arthur Morgan, and customize it and your abilities.
- A camp. A small camp holds a posse of up to four, a large camp up to seven. Camp upgrades add things like a fast travel post, a butcher's table, a stew pot, delivery wagons and a weapon locker. Community
- A posse. Up to seven players. Posse members share the leader's camp, and the leader can queue the group for competitive modes and move everyone between sessions.
- A rank. Doing things earns XP, XP raises your rank, and ranks unlock clothing, weapons, horses, camp items and ability cards. The maximum rank is 100. Progression

Over 2026, Rockstar's Red Dead Online Newswire posts have been monthly events: boosted payouts on one role or activity, discounts, free community-inspired outfits and returning limited-time clothing.
