What your PC needs, what the PC version added to the game, and how to fix the most common launch crash, all from Rockstar's current store and support pages. Launch-era advice from 2019 is deliberately left out.

Requirements
These match Rockstar's store page and its support article (last updated April 30, 2024), read on September 30, 2026. Rockstar's 2019 launch announcement listed Windows 7 as the minimum. The current pages say Windows 10 64-bit. Official Support

Rockstar also requires the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Games Social Club login. Internet is needed for activation, online play and periodic entitlement checks, and only one PC login is allowed per account at a time. Rockstar notes that downloadable content and programming changes will change the requirements over time, so check Rockstar Support (opens in a new tab) ↗ before you buy.
What the PC version added
When Rockstar announced the PC version, it described the world rendered with farther draw distance, better lighting and shadows, snow trails and reflections, tessellated trees, and improved grass and fur. It also lists HDR, 4K and beyond, multi-monitor and widescreen setups, and faster frame rates. Official
- Three Story bounty missions and two gang hideouts (the Del Lobos, at Gaptooth Breach and Solomon's Folly).
- Two treasure maps (Landmarks of Riches, The Elemental Trail) and one new mission about herbs.
- Four weapons: M1899 Pistol, Evans Repeater, High Roller Revolver, LeMat Revolver.
- Four horses and three wild coats: Warped Brindle Arabian, Few Spot Appaloosa, Perlino Andalusian, Red Chestnut Arabian.
- Five trinkets: Hawk Talon, Cat Eye, Shark Tooth, Turtle Shell and Crow Beak.
- Photo Mode lets you move the camera freely, add filters, stickers and text, and upload shots to Social Club. It later came to consoles.
Vulkan, DirectX 12 and the launch crash
The game supports Vulkan and DirectX 12. If it crashes at launch with an ERR_GFX_STATE error, Rockstar Support suggests, in order: Support
- Update your graphics drivers from Nvidia or AMD.
- Switch to DirectX 12. In Settings, Graphics, Advanced Settings, choose Unlocked, then set Graphics API to DirectX 12. Save, but do not restart when prompted. Return to the main menu, exit the game and relaunch.
- Disable fullscreen optimization. Right-click RDR2.exe, open Properties, and on the Compatibility tab check "Run this program as administrator" and disable fullscreen optimization. The game folder is reached through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic.
Latest title update
The newest update note on Rockstar Support's Red Dead Redemption 2 page, as of September 30, 2026, is Title Update 1.32 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC), last updated September 25, 2024. It fixed stability problems, set voice chat to Off by default, stopped custom posse and horse names from showing publicly, and, on PC, added HDR10+ support, updated AMD FSR to version 2.2, and fixed Offline Mode and a 3200x2400 resolution option. Title Update 1.25 (July 13, 2021) introduced Blood Money and brought Nvidia DLSS to supported Nvidia cards. It also ended bug fixes specific to Windows 7, which fits the current Windows 10 requirement. Support
