Legendary animals

Sixteen rare, tougher and more valuable animals roam the Story Mode map. Each can be killed once per save, and every kill gives a perfect pelt. This page tells you where to look and what you need first.

How they work

  • One of each, per save. A legendary animal you kill will not come back in that save. Plan your approach.
  • Clues first. Enter the area and use Eagle Eye. You get a series of clues, and the third one leads straight to the animal.
  • Always perfect. Legendary pelts are never damaged, whatever you shoot them with, so explosive ammunition is fine. They also count as clean kills for the Master Hunter challenge.
  • Worth more. The pelts, claws and meat trade for good money and exclusive accessories.

Do not mix up Story Mode and Online

Red Dead Online has its own legendary animals, added with the Naturalist role, and its own way to find them through Harriet Davenport's Animal Sighting Missions. Rockstar's role page says Naturalists can learn to tell legendary animal trails apart. The Online list is larger than Story Mode's and has different names. Official Naturalist role

100% completion You need to kill any five legendary animals, not all sixteen. The Master Hunter challenge ranks cover a legendary panther.
