Two games in one install

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a slow, detailed open-world story. Red Dead Online is a separate multiplayer mode that shares the same map. Pick your path below. The two are not interchangeable: gear, money and progress do not carry across.

Path one
Story Mode: new or returning
This game rewards slowing down. Camp, horse, hunting and honor are not side content: they are how the world works. Learn these first and the rest follows.
- Know the three cores. Health, Stamina and Dead Eye each have an inner core that drains slowly, about 90 minutes from full when you are standing around, slower on horseback and not at all in camp. Food, tonics and sleep refill them. Eating well can turn a core golden for a while. Community
- Treat camp as home base. Donate to the camp box and to Pearson, do the chores (each one gives honor), and keep morale up. Stay away for more than three days and you lose honor when you return. Camp guide
- Bond with your horse. Ride, feed, brush, calm and pat it. Bonding has four levels, and a strong bond keeps the horse steady in a gunfight. Do not lose it: a new horse starts again. Horse guide
- Use Dead Eye. It slows time and lets you mark targets. More of its power opens up as the story goes on, and you can raise the core itself through Dead Eye XP. Weapons and Dead Eye
- Look after your guns. They degrade with use and with mud and water. Clean them at a gunsmith or with gun oil. The bow never degrades. Upkeep
- Understand honor and the law. Honor changes from small choices, shapes some scenes, and gives store discounts. A bandana hides your face from witnesses, not your honor. Honor and law
- Hunt properly. A clean kill with the right weapon keeps a pelt perfect. The wrong ammunition ruins it. Hunting guide
- Do not chase 100% on your first run. A handful of things are missable, mostly chapter-limited camp activities. The completion page separates what counts from what does not.
Path two
Red Dead Online: new or returning
Red Dead Online is available inside Red Dead Redemption 2 or as a standalone game ($19.99 on the Rockstar Store, checked October 1, 2026). Its progress is its own.
- Create your character, then your camp. A camp is your home base. Small camps host a posse of up to four, large camps up to seven. Community
- Learn the currencies. RDO$ is cash, Gold Bars are the premium currency, XP raises your rank, and each role has its own Role XP and Role Tokens. Progression
- Pick a first role. There are five. Moonshiner needs Trader first (a completed sale or Trader Rank 5), so start as a Trader if Moonshiner is your goal. Collector begins with Madam Nazar, and Bounty Hunter begins in Rhodes. CGN guidance All five roles
- Check the event. Rockstar runs a monthly event with boosted payouts. The current one runs through Oct 5. This month
- Fill your ability cards. One Dead Eye card unlocks at Rank 2, and three passive card slots at Ranks 10, 20 and 40. Community
Do not mix them up
Story Mode and Online differences that catch people out
| Topic | Story Mode | Red Dead Online |
|---|---|---|
| Dead Eye | Raised through the story and Dead Eye XP; the core is separate. | Upgraded only with ability cards. The community reference says it does not slow time. |
| Honor | Gives store discounts and shapes scenes. | Starts neutral. High honor gives no store discount. |
| Camp | The gang camp, shared by everyone. | Your own camp, for you and your posse. |
| Horses | 19 breeds. | More breeds than Story Mode, bought from the stable. |
| Legendary animals | 16 animals, each once per save. | Its own set, found by Naturalists. |
